When facing one of the most difficult decisions a pet owner can make, you don't have to navigate it alone. At Dunwoody Animal Medical Center, we strive to help families understand their pet's options and make decisions with confidence, compassion, and support. Whether your pet is living with a chronic illness, experiencing age-related decline, or nearing the end of life, our veterinary team is here to focus on what matters most: comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

How Do I Know When It's Time?

One of the hardest questions any pet owner faces is knowing when a beloved companion's quality of life has declined enough that additional treatment may no longer be helping. There is rarely one single moment that provides a clear answer. Instead, families often notice gradual changes in their pet's comfort, mobility, appetite, or ability to enjoy everyday activities.

While every pet's situation is unique, many families begin asking this question when they notice that their pet is having more bad days than good days. If you're unsure, our veterinarians can help assess your pet's quality of life and discuss options that align with your family's goals and your pet's comfort.

Signs that may indicate your pet's quality of life is declining include:

• Difficulty standing, walking, or getting comfortable

• Loss of interest in favorite activities

• Ongoing pain that cannot be adequately controlled

• Significant changes in appetite or weight

• Difficulty breathing

• Frequent accidents or inability to stay clean

• Increased anxiety, confusion, or withdrawal

Our veterinarians can help you evaluate your pet's overall comfort and quality of life and discuss options that are best for both your pet and your family.

What Is Veterinary Hospice Care?

Veterinary hospice care focuses on comfort rather than cure. For pets with terminal illnesses, advanced age, or conditions that cannot be cured, hospice care can help maximize comfort and maintain quality of life for as long as possible. Hospice care may include:

• Pain management

• Nutritional support

• Mobility assistance recommendations

• Monitoring quality of life

• Ongoing guidance for families

• Adjustments to treatment plans as your pet's needs change

Our goal is to help your pet enjoy as many comfortable days as possible while supporting your family through each stage of the journey.

When Euthanasia May Be the Kindest Choice

Many families worry about making the decision too soon. Others worry about waiting too long. When a pet's suffering can no longer be adequately relieved, euthanasia may be the kindest and most compassionate option available.

Our team will never pressure you into a decision. We will discuss your pet's condition honestly, answer your questions, and help you understand all available options so you can make the choice that feels right for your family.

What to Expect During the Process

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult moments a family can experience. Our goal is to make the process as peaceful, comfortable, and unhurried as possible for both you and your pet.

Before the Appointment

At Dunwoody Animal Medical Center, end-of-life appointments take place in our dedicated Comfort Room, a private space designed to provide a calm and supportive environment during this important time. Soft lighting, gentle music, comfortable seating, and a private entrance and exit allow families to spend time together away from the activity of the hospital.

When you arrive, your pet is welcome to enjoy favorite treats from our Treat Bar. We even keep a special jar of "Goodbye Kisses," because we believe no pet should leave this world without getting to taste chocolate.

During the Appointment

One of our veterinarians will meet with your family, answer any questions, and explain each step of the process. A sedative is administered first to help your pet relax completely and drift into a peaceful sleep. Many families find comfort knowing their pet is calm, comfortable, and surrounded by the people who love them most.

When You're Ready

Once you feel ready, the final medication is administered. The process is gentle and painless, and your pet passes peacefully.

Afterward

There is never a time limit. Whether you need a few minutes or much longer, we encourage you to spend as much time with your pet as you need before and after the procedure. Some families choose to stay throughout the entire process, while others prefer to say goodbye beforehand. There is no right or wrong choice—our team will support whatever feels most comfortable for you.

To help honor your pet's memory, we offer keepsakes such as paw prints and fur clippings, and we can discuss aftercare options including private cremation, communal cremation, home burial guidance, and memorial services through our trusted partner, Faithful Companions.

Above all, we believe no family should feel rushed through this process. We are here to provide guidance, support, and a peaceful space to say goodbye in your own way and on your own time.
